FAIRFIELD ROAD RACE

FAIRFIELD ROAD RACE- MAY 10, 2003

The “Ghost of Winter Past” paid a fleeting visit to the Fifth Annual Fairfield Road Race. Fortunately he only stopped by long enough to bring out 45 pairs of warm cycling togs and to add an adrenaline boosting sleet shower to the middle of the race.

When the sleet hit the road, the Cat 2-3 pack hit the gas, stretching a few warm blooded riders to their limit and otherwise soften them up for the long climb out of Choteau. The climb shredded most of the field, with a strong lead group of seven containing three Share the Roads racers who ultimately sent Andrew Minier up the road for a solo win, followed by a speedy sprinting John Behrens winning the pack sprint. Northern Rockies’ Owen Gue took the last podium spot. Special commendation to Tejay Van Garderen for a fine fourth place in a tough, tough race.

The Cat 4, Masters, and women’s field started with 22 riders rolling comfortably out of town until GDCT’s Keith Carparelli took a chance on a long break. His team’s effective blocking made Keith’s efforts looking very promising until the turn-around when a strong chase by Five Valley Velo started to bring him back. Great Divide launched another attack on the run into Fairfield which nearly succeeded until the seven remaining chasers caught up and set up for a pack sprint. Rick Finley brought home a convincing win for Great Divide.
